Costs: Union Myths vs. The Facts

IATSE Local 700 has set up a website to try to convince employees to support the Union. They say a lot of fluff, but let's compare that to the facts.

Union Website Fluff: "Do we potentially stand to lose some of what we have now (pay, vacation time, health benefits, etc.) if we go union?" The more critical question is whether it is likely that we'll lose pay, vacation time, health benefits, etc., if we go union. And the resounding answer is no.

Translation: Yes you can stand to lose some of what you have now. In good faith negotiations, you can end up with more, less or the same wages and benefits you have now.  The Union cannot guarantee what is "likely" to happen because anything can happen during good faith negotiations.

Union Website Fluff: "Is it true that I will be forced to pay massive fees if we unionize? No, Local 700 and Local 683 have pledged to waive any Initiation Fees for current Technicolor employees if the facility staff chooses to organize.

Fact: Any new employees will probably have to pay that high initiation fee. And if you leave the company and come back, you too will probably have to pay it.  And how much is the initiation fee?  According to Local 700's own financial statement filed with the Department of Labor, it can be as high as $3,000!!! OUCH!!!

Union Website Fluff: "What about dues? Each local has its own sliding-scale formula, based on classification and pay rates, for calculating dues."

Fact: It doesn't really matter what the Union says on its website about dues. What matters is what they stated in the financial report they filed with the Department of Labor. According to that report, Local 700 dues can be as high as $300 per quarter. That means you could potentially pay up to $1,200 per year!!! Compare the Union fluff to the facts and you'll see the Union just doesn't make sense.

Vote No, For No Union!!!
